The Washington Health Alliance serves as the Washington regional leader for The Leapfrog Group, an employer-driven patient safety organization operating across the country.

In this role, we work directly with Washington hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers to ensure completion of the safety survey, which is used by The Leapfrog Group for biannual public scoring.

Since assuming regional leadership in 2022, WHA has been increasing outreach directly to hospitals on matters of patient safety, meeting with organizations to address concerns and more.

How The Leapfrop Group’s patient safety information is used:

In addition to publicly reporting the Survey Results from participating hospitals and ASCs, Leapfrog and other entities use the Survey Results in several ways:

  • To recognize the highest quality hospitals and ASCs through our Leapfrog Top Hospitals and Leapfrog Top ASC Awards
  • To help employers and purchasers identify the best facilities for their employees’ health care needs and work with health plans to design benefits packages that steer employees towards the safest and highest quality hospitals and surgery centers
  • To help those insured by our employer and purchaser members choose the right place for their care by integrating hospital and surgery center Survey Results on health plan websites and in other transparency tools
  • To help health plans identify high-value care through the Leapfrog Value-Based Purchasing Program
  • To educate consumers on the safety of hospitals in their community with the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Employers interested in learning how to best leverage The Leapfrog Groups’ hospital and patient safety information can use its Lives and Dollars Lost Calculator. This powerful tool providers insights on:

  • The number of avoidable deaths among covered lives
  •  Hidden surcharges paid for each inpatient admission due to medical errors
  •  The percent of total health care expenditures spent on medical mistakes
  •  The likelihood of avoidable harm by race and ethnicity
